Diabetes
vs
Barbados

Did you know that noncommunicable diseases, such as diabetes, cancer, and heart disease, have become one of the greatest health and development challenges of this century, outnumbering infectious diseases as the leading causes of death globally? (WHO, Sept 2022). In Barbados, our small island home, the situation is equally concerning. With an estimated 208,300 adults in our population, 18.7% are living with diabetes, amounting to 38,300 people. This figure is rapidly increasing, making diabetes the primary health challenge on our island, compounded by additional health complications.

Improve Your Health, Improve Your Life

The rising rates of obesity, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, and poor diet are major contributors to the increasing prevalence of diabetes. This crisis is not unique to Barbados but is affecting the wider Caribbean region. To address this, we need a holistic healthcare approach that prioritizes ease of access, patient-centered care, collaboration, technology, and affordability.

At Live Well Clinic, our primary goal is to make Barbados the first country to successfully tackle obesity and type 2 diabetes. We believe that by adopting a comprehensive approach to healthcare, we can make this a reality.

What is the main reason that we are seeing such a high rate of diabetes?

How do we fight to prevent new cases? How do we work to reverse it?

As the saying goes, "prevention is better than cure," and that is precisely what we aim to achieve at Live Well Clinic. We want to help all Barbadians stay healthy by working with them before they get sick. By identifying and tackling health issues early on, such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and certain cancers, we can increase the likelihood of successful treatment and reduce the risk of developing other health conditions.

Research consistently shows that lifestyle interventions, including diet, physical activity, and sustained weight loss, can be highly effective in reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes by up to 50% for some individuals. At Live Well Clinic, we are here to work with you and help you achieve optimal health through preventive measures.

We have great news, it is possible to work to improve your prognosis and in some cases reverse type 2 diabetes.

We work with our patients to develop a care management plan that incorporates nutrition, exercise and other lifestyle factors with the aim of reducing medication intake, improving blood values (HbA1c) and providing an overall better quality of life.
